The framework set out by Johan Rockström and his team of 28 scientists in 2007. They identified nine measurable planetary boundaries within which humanity can continue to develop and thrive for generations to come. Crossing these boundaries increases the risk of generating large-scale abrupt or irreversible environmental changes. These planetary boundaries include global warming, freshwater use, ocean acidification, ozone depletion, greenhouse gas emissions, chemical pollution, land use, and biodiversity loss and extinction.
